Granadown 2026 or going to the bullfight for a good cause

Few festivals in Spain can match the tradition and heritage of the one that opens the bullfighting season every spring at La Monumental de Frascuelo in Granada. Here we tell you its story, its noble purpose, and the line-up for the 2026 edition so you can start planning and book your seats. Hurry!

The Granadown Bullfighting Festival was created with a purely charitable purpose: to raise funds for the Granada Down Syndrome Association. Nearly three decades later, it has not only become the traditional event that opens the bullfighting season in Granada, but its original mission remains as strong as ever.

The first edition of this bullfighting and charity event was held in the late 1990s (the 2026 edition will be the 28th) with this very objective. It is worth noting that the Granada Down Syndrome Association uses the funds raised to finance programmes that promote independence, speech therapy and support for the employment integration of people with Down syndrome — initiatives made possible thanks to the proceeds from each festival.

Over the years, the Granadown festival has evolved from a local event into an essential fixture in the city’s cultural calendar, with the support of major institutions such as the Granada City Council, which has always been aware of the importance of the event and, above all, of the role it plays in supporting this association.

Historically, the line-up for each edition has featured the leading figures of bullfighting from recent decades. Their presence has helped give the event prestige and visibility far beyond the local or provincial level, as Granadown is now a festival with nationwide reach.

The festival, one of the oldest regularly held charity bullfighting festivals in Spain (it was only interrupted for two years due to the COVID-19 health crisis, returning strongly in 2022), has even expanded its charitable scope in recent years by also collaborating with the UAPO Foundation (Oncology Patient Support Unit).

The 2026 Edition

The 28th Bullfighting Festival in support of the Granada Down Syndrome Association (Granadown) and the UAPO Foundation will take place on Sunday, 12 April 2026 at 5:30 pm, featuring bulls from Hermanos García Jiménez and Olga Jiménez Fernández, with a line-up that includes some of the most prominent figures in modern bullfighting.

The event will open with local rejoneador (horseback bullfighter) Sebastián Fernández, followed in order by leading matadors David Fandila “El Fandi”, Sebastián Castella, Daniel Luque, and Pablo Aguado. Completing the bill will be the young novice bullfighter Olga Casado, trained at the José Cubero “Yiyo” Bullfighting School in Madrid.

There is no better plan for the first Sunday after Easter: you can witness the skill of the top matadors first-hand while supporting a noble cause in the dreamlike setting of Granada.
